Stuffle Appointed IAS Executive DirectorGene Stuffle, long-time IEEE Eastern Idaho Section member, has been appointed Executive Director of the Idaho Academy of Science (IAS) effective April 1, 2011. Gene also serves as Executive Director of the Eastern Idaho Engineering Council. The two organizations have been mutual affiliates for several years, and Gene has expressed his hope that the two organizations can work closely together to accomplish shared goals related to science, technology and engineering. In place of a normal Editorial, we are extremely pleased to provide a brief resume for our newly-minted Executive Director, Dr. R. Eugene (Gene) Stuffle. Gene is currently a Full Professor in the Idaho State University School of Engineering, where he has taught for over twenty years. He is also Executive Director and a member of the Board of the Eastern Idaho Engineering Council. Prior to his teaching career, he also had several years of industrial experience. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Rose Polytechnic Institute (now the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) in Terre Haute, Indiana. Between his times in school, Gene worked as a development engineer at the General Electric Laboratory in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After receiving his Master’s degree, he spent three years in the United States Army, ending with the rank of Sergeant. Gene then spent three years at the General Electric Applied R&D Laboratory in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His work there resulted in a patent application. After attaining a Master of Science in Business Administration (M.S.B.A.) degree from Indiana University, he went on to earn his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1979. Over the next decade, he held professorships at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan, and at the University of Missouri-Rolla. In August 1989, he began his career at Idaho State University as an Associate Professor in the College of Engineering. At ISU, he has served as Interim Chair of Electrical Engineering, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, and Interim Chair of Computer Science. He has more than 50 publications, primarily in the areas of computer-aided education and circuits and systems. His volunteer efforts include MATHCOUNTS and National Engineers Week Organizing Committees. He has authored several in-house texts, software manuals, and solution manuals for popular textbooks. He is a Life Senior Member of IEEE (member since 1963) and has served as the ISU IEEE Student Branch Counselor since its formation in 1996. He was Chair of the IEEE Bruce Angwin (formerly WESCON) Scholarship Committee from 2001 to 2007.
