ABSTRACT:
Technology is a major source of social change. Ignoring this does not justify, rationalize,
or lessen our responsibility as technologists.
The good news is that there are some ways to account for social impacts
and change. The bad news is it requires
a new and different kind technologist – a broader more holistic thinker.
BIOGRAPHY:
Sam’s
professional career began performing experimentation and simulation modeling of
agricultural processes (1983-93). This
work evolved into managing the development of a simulation based farm
management information system, entitled Almanac. This required the creation of a software
engineering laboratory that was tailored to integration of science and
technology knowledge into user oriented decision tools (1989-97). The laboratory was the first within the USDA
Ag Research Service to involve farmers intimately in the software development
process. From this experience in
organizational development, he gained an interested in organizational change,
process improvement (1994-2003), social dynamics, and has attained theory and
skills the area of culture change, inquiry, and intervention. He has interest in simulation-based
engineering and analysis and pursuing advancements in a next generation systems
engineering environment.
